The Dodge Nitro. You know, same super-powerful-manly sounding naming convention as Charger, Caliber, Challenger, Testosterone. But the difference is, I forgot this existed. Then, BAM!, my eyeballs got slapped by two of them within a single stretch of road.

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with them? I have no idea and am curious only because of how little I know about it.

I had one as a rental in PX for two weeks, actually not bad. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep's sync-like system works really well and overall it was a pretty decent car to drive around in. I think mine was an R/T which mostly means big wheels and some trim I think. Compared to the Caliber that I have also had unfortunate rental experience with, it was great.

Yup. An odd-looking Jeep Liberty, with low-profile tires.

I have not heard good things about build quality on those.

There are four in my parking lot right now. They are everywhere because they are built here at the Toledo North Assembly Plant.

I think the only reason to get one was that you could get the 4.0 V6 which wasn't available in the Liberty (3.7 only). So you could have 260hp and 265 ft-lbs in the Nitro, or 210 hp and 235 in the Jeep. As a side note, did you know the Jeep Liberty was still selling well (75,000 units!) in its last year 2012. Just shows you the power of the "Jeep" name that such a crappy, dated vehicle could do so well (also incentives)

Drove "Caliber" for a very short time.
Why "short time" you ask; because, after a less than 10-minute drive, I returned the vehicle to the agency and requested something else, because the "Caliber" was the absolute WORST vehicle I have ever had the misfortune to drive...seriously terrible!

I actually applauded Dodge when they made this thing. They realized 99.99% of people who buy SUVs never take them off-road, so they took a Liberty and ditched all the off-road stuff to make an urban SUV.

It's just too bad it was during the time Dodge was producing some pretty crappy products.

I think many of us have this experience: http://jalopnik.com/5242358/rememb…

That's an unfortunate fact. Someone was looking at suvs and said "what do you think about the Liberty?" I think my laughter was sufficient enough of an answer.

I think they were designed strictly for donking purposes.

I did too but I never went farther than that in trying to figure it out. I was curious about how it actually is...or what it was for really.

I saw one in Tahiti that appeared to have a manual and a diesel.

When I was in college, the street racing cops had one of these to try to observe the local not-exactly-sanctioned gatherings. It was painted bright green with like 24'' rims and fart cannon exhaust. Everyone thought it was funny when some stocky bald guy would roll through in his green Nitro trying to blend in.
